Measure Your BOLT Score
The Body Oxygen Level Test (BOLT) measures your sensitivity to carbon dioxide and breathing efficiency. The ideal BOLT score is 40 seconds.
- Take a normal, gentle breath in through your nose, then allow a normal, gentle breath out through your nose.
- After your exhale, hold your nose with your fingers to prevent air from entering your lungs.
- Press Start and begin timing your breath hold.
- Hold until you feel the first definite desire to breathe — such as an involuntary contraction in your abdomen or throat, the need to swallow, or a constriction of the airways.
- Press Stop, release your nose, and breathe in calmly through your nose. Your first breath should be controlled — not a gasp.
- Resume normal breathing. Your BOLT score is the number of seconds you held your breath.
Your breathing at rest is likely noisy, irregular, or labored. You may sigh or yawn frequently and experience disrupted sleep. The good news: breathing exercises can dramatically improve your health and performance.
Your breathing may be compromised by nasal congestion, wheezing, or poor sleep quality. Energy and concentration are likely affected. Focused breathing exercises will improve your sleep, reduce breathlessness, and enhance fitness.
Your breathing at rest is quiet, calm, and effortless — well done! There is still room to improve endurance and performance. Each 5-second increase in your BOLT score will noticeably improve your energy and reduce breathlessness during exercise.
You have excellent CO₂ tolerance and efficient breathing patterns. You're close to the ideal BOLT score of 40 seconds. Advanced techniques and sports-specific exercises can help you reach peak performance.
Outstanding! A BOLT score of 40 seconds is the hallmark of optimal breathing efficiency, as described in Exercise Physiology research. Your breathing rate is likely 8–10 breaths per minute. Maintain your edge with advanced Oxygen Advantage® techniques.
