I have been teaching gentle yoga for more than 20 years. In each session I include periods of observing the breath and pranayama (breathing techniques). Currently I teach one community group in Porthcawl and one closed group for cancer support.

It was in this latter group that someone asked, “But how should I breathe in every day life?”

I realised that I had some knowledge but not enough to explain why nasal breathing is more beneficial.

Since doing the Oxygen Advantage Functional Breathing course I have realised that although I am no longer asthmatic, I was still breathing harder and louder than I needed to.

My yoga classes are still gentle with a focus on listening to the body. I still suggest moving with the breath and include more of the science behind nasal breathing and its benefits for health and sleep. I also share my personal experience of thinking I was breathing optimally by keeping my mouth closed and breathing into the lower ribs and how I now know that I need to keep practising gentler, slower breaths and breath holds.
