It has been said that “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” (Lao Tzu), so to the journey of life begins with a breath. When things get tough throughout life, we say “take it one step at a time” but perhaps we should say “one breath at a time.” The quality of those breaths can greatly influence the quality of life. How we breathe influences not only our physiology, but also our minds and our emotional state. Breathing is something that generally “just happens,” but we have the power to take control of that breath, even if only for a short time, and learn to optimise our respiration, and so improve the quality of our lives. Small changes can have a big impact.
